Wm. H. Monroe 1886-1946

William H. Monroe, the son of George W. and Ida (Miner) Monroe, was born at Keosauqua, Iowa Sept. 1, 1886 and passed away at the Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Ks. Sept. 24, 1946 at the age of 60 years and 24 days.

Funeral services for Wm. H. Monroe of Strong City, Ks. who passed away in Wesley Hospital at Wichita, Ks. Sept. 24, 1946 were held in the McKenzie Funeral Home in Cottonwood Falls Saturday afternoon, Sept. 28, 1946 at two o'clock with Rev. David McCleave, DD in charge. Mrs. James Bell sang: accompanied by Miss Marjorie Fisk. The pall bearers were Henry Glese, D. M. Smith, Robert Simmons, Russell Cahoone, W.F. Kieferle and Emmett Roberts. Interment was made in Prairie Grove cemetery.

In 1903 he, with his parents, came to Chase County and later moved to Cottonwood Falls which was his home until 1941. He then moved to his small farm west of Strong City, where he devoted his time to quarry work.

On May 28, 1906, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Pettit. To this union was born four children: Ethel Maureen, who died in infancy, Mrs. H. Nelson Simmons of Strong City, Mrs. Russell Hebenthal of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Wm. D. Monroe of Granby, Colorado.

His wife and children were with him at the time of his death. Thirty-one years ago he joined the Presbyterian Church at Cottonwood Falls and at the time of his death he was teacher of the Intermediate and Junior boys class in the Sunday School. He had taught this class periodically for the last 23 years.

Besides his immediate family, he leaves five brothers and one sister, Mrs. Ina Haley of California; Fred Monroe of Hutchinson; Don Monroe of Strong City; Charles and Frank Monroe of Wichita; Leo Monroe of San Bernadino, Calif. He also leaves seven grandsons, one granddaughter and several nieces and nephews, besides a host of friends.
