DR. SLAUGHTER DIES OF INJURIES RECEIVED IN FALL

Laughlin Hospital Staff Member Was 46 Years Old

Dr. E. Free Slaughter, 46, of Queen City died Sunday evening at 7:35 in a Kirksville hospital after receiving a fractured skull in the afternoon when he fell from a ladder.

He was replacing a light bulb on the back porch of his home east of Queen City when he fell, hitting the back of his head on a brick border of the sidewalk just off the porch. He was rushed to the hospital, where he lived only two hours. He never regained consciousness.

The son of Samuel F. and Lela E. Slaughter, he was born Jan. 20, 1912, near Queen City. He was never married.

Surviving are his parents, with whom he made his home; two sisters, Mrs. Ivan Lamb of Palisades, Neb. and Dr, Betty Slaughter of Lexington, and two brothers, James Slaughter and Harold Slaughter, both of Queen City.

Dr. Slaughter graduated from Queen City High School with the class of 1930. He attended the Kansas City College of Osteopathy and Surgery for one year and then transferred to the Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery where he graduated in June of 1938.

He entered active practice in Odessa, Mo., in 1938 and stayed there until January 1942 when he enlisted in the United States Army Medical Corp. He was discharged in January 1946 and returned to Odessa where he practiced until 1956.

After the first of this year he joined the staff at Laughlin Hospital in the cardiovascular disease section where he worked until the time of his death.

Dr. Laughlin was a member of the Queen City Baptist church and also the Flying Doctor’s Organization.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Queen City Baptist church conducted by the Rev. Wilmer Calvin. Interment will be in the Queen City cemetery. The body was taken from the Dooley Funeral Home to the family home.
