Jacob Leffler.

Jacob Leffler was born in Harrisburg township, Van Buren county, Iowa, on February 27, 1844, the fourth child of Monsuit and Irene Leffler. His father was a German immigrant, who came to this country a young man and settled on the old homestead in Harrisburg township, 4 ½ miles north of Bentonsport, while Iowa was yet a territory. He was soon wedded to Miss Irene Coven, and took her to his log cabin, and here they lived contented, prosperous and happy lives for many years, and here their large family of children were born, and grew to manhood and womanhood. Jacob was the second son, and he assisted in all the arduous duties of farm life until he was 19 years of age, in the year of 1863, when he with others of his neighbors made the overland journey to the gold field in the far west. He remained in the far west until 1869 when he returned to the old home. Soon after his return he in partnership with his brothers James and Andrew purchased a farm near to old homestead known as the Blackmore farm. In 1875, on January 28, he was united in marriage with Miss Henrietta Woods, a daughter of Alexander Woods, one of the pioneer farmers of Harrisburg township. The newly married couple made their home on the old Black ******* torn ******* when they sold out the interests in it to Mr. Joshua Gutherie, and purchased the farm on Vernon Prairie of W. P. L. Muir, to which they moved to the autumn of 1896, where they have lived since.

Two daughters blessed this union, Myrtle who is the wife of Amasa Roberts, and Lena, who wedded Thomas Burnett. Paul Woods was adopted into their home when an infant, his mother having died when he was a few weeks old, and he has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Leffler ever since. There remain to mourn his demise his faithful wife and two affectionate and the adopted son, three brothers Dr. John Leffler of San Francisco, Cal., James and Andrew Leffler of this county, and four sisters Miss Lizzie Leffler, Mrs. Linda Story, Mrs. Stephen Perkins and Mrs. Mary Morris, all of whom reside in this county. He was for many years a member of Des Moines Valley Lodge No. 238 I. O. O. F. of Bentonsport and still retained his membership in that lodge at the time of his death. Mr. Leffler’s health has been on the decline for the past five years, and this fall there was a general breakdown of his whole system. From August 10 until October 9 the battle for life was constant, when Death’s Angel gave him the summons and he obeyed it.
