Van Buren Co. Farm Leader Takes His Life
**Handwritten: Oct. 8 - 48

BIRMINGHAM.-Ervin Julius (Count) Mueller, 56, former president of the Van Buren County Farm bureau, committed suicide at 12:50 p.m. Friday while riding in a car driven by his daughter, Coroner Harold Catcott said.

The daughter, Martha, a freshman at Birmingham high school, said her father ordered her to stop the car as they neared their home five miles southwest of Birmingham, took a pistol from the glove compartment and shot himself in the head. His wife said he had been despondent.

A World war I veteran, he was a member of the American Legion 40 & 8, Masonic and Elks lodges, Congregational church and the Van Buren county fair board.

He leaves his wife, two sons, Ervin J., Jr. and William S. Mueller, and his daughter, Martha Ruth, all students of Birmingham high school; his mother, now in California; and three sisters, Stella L. Mueller, Linda Hutton and Martha Knipper, all of Santa Ana, Calif.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Catcott funeral home.
