Herbert B. Carroll Dies At Lost Nation

BLOOMFIELD. - Herbert B. Carroll, 64, former Van Buren county superintendent of schools, state representative from Davis county and a lumber and hardware dealer for many years, died at 8:45 a.m. Friday at his home in Lost Nation after an illness of several months. He had been operating a lumber yard there the past year.

The son of John and Alice Carroll, he was born in Van Buren county June 12, 1881. He taught in rural and town schools, managed a lumber yard at Clarinda, was in the hardware business at Pulaski and Bloomfield with his cousin, Wilbur Carroll, then became Van Buren county superintendent. He published the Keosauqua Republican for eight years. He served two terms in the state legislature and was employed at the O'Hara hardware store in Ottumwa a short time before going to Lost Nation. He was a member of the Free Methodist church at Cedar Rapids.

He was married August 12, 1914, to Miss Bess Dundore of Perry, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Pauline Shepp of Mt. Pleasant, two sisters, Mrs. D.C. Nicklin of Selma and Mrs. Ira Lasley of Ottumwa, and two brothers Keith and Clair Carroll of Ottumwa.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wagler funeral home in charge of the Rev. Warner B. Keller of the Ottumwa Free Methodist church. Burial will be in the Bloomfield cemetery.
