MILTON DOCTOR SACRIFICES LIFE TO AID PATIENT

Dr. C.N. Stephenson Honored at Short Services Sunday; Burial at Troy

WIFE SERIOUSLY ILL

Members of Van Buren County Medical Society Serve as Pallbearers

Hundreds of persons paid final tribute Sunday afternoon to Dr. C.N. Stephenson, Milton physician who, though ill, responded to the call of a patient even at the cost of his own life. Hundreds more could not crowd into the Presbyterian church at Milton where the funeral service was held.

Dr. Stephenson had been ill of flu for two weeks when he was called to attend a patient Saturday, December 14. Upon returning home his condition became worse and he was taken to the Ottumwa hospital. A serious case of sinus infection developed, followed by heart disease. The end came at 11:55 o'clock Thursday night.

Knowing that death was near, Dr. Stephenson requested that his funeral be a quiet affair without music and that burial be at Troy near the home where he was born May 26, 1885. His body lay in state at the church from 11 until 1 o'clock, at which time the casket was sealed. The Rev. Dr. L.V. Harmon of Parsons college at Fairfield, pastor of the Milton Presbyterian church, had charge of the short services.

The pallbearers were Van Buren county physicians: Dr. L.A. Coffin of Farmington, Dr. J.W. Webb of Bonaparte, Dr. Roscoe Pollock of Douds, Dr. W.H. Mott of Farmington, Dr. E.E. Sherman of Keosauqua and Dr. F.J. Graver of Stockport. All the other members of the Van Buren County Medical society served as honorary pallbearers, and a larg(e) number of doctors from other counties who had been associated with him in his work attended the funeral.

Dr. Stephenson's wife is seriously ill in the hospital in Ottumwa. She was ill during the illness of her husband and left her bed to go to Ottumwa with him. She was ordered to a hospital bed as soon as she reached the institution. A daughter, Marjorie, remainel(sp) with her mother at the hospital during the funeral. Dr. Stephenson also leaves two sons, Charles and William, both students in medical college; his mother, Mrs. Ella Lindsay of Chicago; and aunt, Mrs. Mary Ross, who made her home with the Stephensons at Milton; a half-sister, Mrs. Helen Barnes of Gilman, and a half brother, D.V. Lindsay of Chicago.

Out of town relatives who attended the funeral include Mrs. Ella Lindsay and D.V. Lindsay of Chicago, Mrs. Helen Barnes from Gilman and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kick and daughter, Gertrude, from Farmington.
