Mary Ellen Lindsay Hunter
(From a Garnett, Kas. Paper)Mary Ellen Lindsay was born November 1,1849, at Birmingham, Ia. Her parents were Robert and Agnes Gould Lindsay. She was educated in the common schools and a local academy, and began to teach school when seventeen years of age, continuing some time in that noble profession.
At about thirty years of age she came to Garnett, Kas., where she made her home the grater part of the time until her marriage to the Rev. James Hunter, March 26, 1908. She was his faithful helpmate for ten years and did royal service as a minister's wife, two years at Greeley, Kas., and eight years at Paola, Kansas, from which place her husband was transferred to Heaven on Aug. 3, 1918. Mrs. Hunter remained in Paola two years and from there she went to Kansas City in 1920, where she has since made her home. For all but ten years of her life, she has been a faithful and consistent and most helpful member of the United Presbyterian church above at 9:30 a.m., October 21, 1932, from her residence at 3337 Euclid avenue, Kansas City, Mo.
She leaves to mourn her departure two sisters, Miss Anna Lindsay, of the home, and Mrs. Clara Duff, South Pasadena, Calif.; seven nephews and nine nieces and a host of friends.
She was unselfish in her devotion to those around her. She thought first of others and rarely of herself. She served Christ Jesus supremely. She believed in God's word implicitly. Even after she was unable to leave her home she did excellent service assisting the pastor in spreading by the use of the telephone such information, as frequently needed to be made known. Although confined to her home for a long time and not able to attend church services, no member of the First United Presbyterian church will be or could be more missed than she. She was eminently fair in her decisions, and kindly in her heart, and has made this world far better because she has passed this way.
