OBITUARY

Marion Sargeant

Marion Sargeant, next to the youngest of the eight children of Alonzo and Eunice Sargeant, pioneer residents of Van Buren county, was born near Vernon, Iowa, January 23rd, 1857.

In the atmosphere of this Christian home he grew to manhood. Although he never affiliated himself with any church, he was a staunch supporter of the church, and a believer in its sacred teaching. He enjoyed attending its services and tried by example and precept to lead others to Christian living. From early youth he was taught the Holy Scriptures and practiced them in his life. The commandment, "Honor thy fatehr(sp)and thy mother," was beautifully kept by him in relation to his father who was a beloved member of his family, after the death of his mother, for a period of 40 years.

He attended the public school of this then thriving little(sp) city, taking a keen delight in securing an education. This trait remained with him throughout his entire life causing him always to be an interesting and well informed companion. His interest in educational affairs was such that he willingly served on the School Board for a number of years and tried in every way to maintain a good school in Vernon. Mr. Sargeant also took an active interest in civic affairs and assisted in every worth while enterprise. He was one of the few interested ones who launched and carried forward the organizing of a cemetery association.

On December 25, 1878, he married Miss Rose Doughty, a life long friend and school mate. To this union two children were born, a daughter Mrs. Lola Helm, of Lakeside, California, and a son, Lloyd Sargeant of Sioux City, Iowa. Death entered this happy home removing the wife and mother after a lingering illness, March 21, 1886.

On February 6, 1889, he was married to Miss Lucy Wilson of Farmington, Iowa, and again a happy home was established. Two sons came to bless this marriage, Glen of Sioux City and Wright of Douds.

The home remained in Vernon until 1915 the family moved to a farm near Douds, where the home has been since that time.
