Peter Doyle Not Dead.
Last week mention was made in the REPUBLICAN that Peter C. Doyle, formerly a resident of Keosauqua, Bentonsport and Vernon of this county, and who married his wife, Miss Hattie Shepherd, in Keosauqua, had committed suicide at the Windsor hotel in Keokuk. The information was obtained from a Keokuk paper, that made two or three mentions of it in that many different issues, and gave the suicide of Peter. But it seems that Peter is alive and well in Ft. Madison, and our old time friend, Hattie Shepherd, now his wife, seriously objects to being advertised as a widow. Her many acquaintances in her old Van Buren county home will not blame her for filing a protest against such an incorrect report. Here is what she says:
Ft. Madison, June 8, 1900.
EDS. KEOSAUQUA REPUBLICAN;
I was greatly surprised to read in your paper published yesterday, that last week it was learned that Peter C. Doyle, a former resident of Vernon, but recently of Ft. Madison, had committed suicide at the Windsor hotel in Keokuk. I wish to say that the man's name was James Doyle, and not in any way related to Peter C. Doyle, who is still living in Ft. Madison and in the enjoyment of good health, both bodily and mentally. I correct the mistake, as we have many kin friends in Keosauqua and Van Buren county where we lived many years.
Respectfully,
MRS. HATTIE S. DOYLE.**Handwritten: 14 JUNE 1900
