Death of Bates DeHart.

Through an oversight, which we regret, we failed to mention the death of Bates DeHart, news of which we received a fortnight ago. He was the last of the brothers of the late Eli DeHart of Henry township, and an uncle of Geo. and Thomas E. DeHart of this place. He left Van Buren county in 1850, going to California and had been back to this county only once, in 1874, at which time he was married to a lady at Lineville, this state.

Death occurred at his home at Watsonville, Cal., Feb. 19, 1909, his age being 81 years, 7 months and 9 days. He was a man of forceful character and of high moral convictions-characteristics of the DeHart name in this county.

The Evening Pajoronian, published at Watsonville, said of him in part: "For many years he was a prominent resident of Hollister, where he took an active and forceful part in affairs. He was of very pronounced convictions, and his ideas were always on the side of righteousness. Being of unquestionable honesty of the rugged sort, he was highly respected."
