Obituary.
On Saturday evening, January 22, 1898, occurred the sudden death of Ira M. Corns, an aged and respected citizen of Bentonsport, Iowa. Although the final summons came suddenly, yet the call was not entirely unexpected by his family. For two years he had been in feeble health resulting from injuries received in a fall from a horse. About two months ago he was seized with an acute attack of la grippe, but was far recovered that on Saturday evening he performed some light outdoor work and on returning to the house lay down on the bed and in a few minutes expired.
Mr. Corns was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, October 23, 1816. Was married to Sarah McElroy October 7, 1841, and together they moved to Bentonsport, Iowa, in 1855, where they have ever since resided. Twelve children were born to this union, nine sons and three daughters. Besides the bereaved wife, five sons and two daughters survive, all of whom were present at the burial of thier aged father.
Funeral services were held in the M.C. church at two o'clock Monday afternoon, a large concourse of friends being present to pay the last tribute of respect to an old resident. Rev. A.E. Thornley officiated choosing his text from Ecclesiastes, 12th chapter, 7th verse. Interment was made in the Bentonsport cemetery. The children of the deceased, who were present, were Martin, Charles, Frank and Alonzo Corns and Mrs. Addie Musser, of Bentonsport, Rufus Corns, of Farmington, and Mrs. Edith Baker, of Ottumwa.
