Death of Valentine Cupp.
Valentine Cupp was born Sept. 24, 1849, near Winchester, Van Buren county, Iowa, and died Oct. 22, 1898, at his home one-half mile north of where he was born. He was married to Mary C. Glandon March 21, 1872. To this union there were ten children, two of whom have preced him to a better land. Eight children with their widowed mother are left to mourn the departure of a kind and indulgent father and husband. Mr. Cupp united with the Presyterian church of Mount Zion four years ago, and he lived a consistent and exemplary Chrisitian, an example to the flock of Christ and honored and respected by all who knew him. For a long time he was not in robust health, but was at all times cheerful under his surfferings. On his bed of sickness he was not heard to murmur or complain but bore his sufferings patiently and was cheerful to the last.
He said he would have like to have lived to see his children grown, but "the Lord doeth all things well; His will, not ours, be done." His request was to thank the friends and neighbors for their acts of kindness during his sickness. He felt that the had nor words to express his gratitude and thankfulness that his lot had been cast among such. The family would express their thanks to all who assisted in the care of their loved one.
The burial services took place on Sabbath afternoon, October 23. AFter a brief service at the home the procession was formed and proceeded to Miller's chapel where the last tribute of respect was paid to one who was endeared to the entire community. A very large concourse of friends had gathered and the funeral was one of the largest ever known in the vicinity. The pastor of the Mount Zion Presbyterian church, Rev. C.S. McElhinney, conducted the service and preached from Psalm ?0:12, "So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hears unto wisdom." Appropriate selections were sung by the choir and congregation after which the sacred dust was interrerd in the burying ground at the chapel.
