David P. Hilles

The subject of this sketch, David P. Hilles, died the morning of Jan. 2, 1910, funeral services being held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ira McCrary and husband in Ottumwa, at 8 o'clock Tuesday morning, Rev. Otto of the Christian church in charge of the services. The body was brought to Keosauqua that forenoon and buried in the Purdom cemetery.

Mr. Hilles was born Dec. 19, 1828, in Washington Co., Pa., and came to Van Buren Co., Iowa, when 9 years old, and here he resided until twelve years ago. For a number of years he was in charge of the Manning store at Vernon. He was married in 1851 to Rebecca Thatcher, who died 17 years ago and who was interred at Vernon, but whose body will be disinterred and brought to the Purdom cemetery and buried by the side of her husband.

Three children are living, Mrs. Ira C. McCrary of Ottumwa, Mark of Oklahoma and Ellsworth E. of Eldon, this state. The deceased was a useful and highly respected citizen, and besides the relatives leaves a host of friends in Van Buren county who mourn his death.
