Frances Victoria Burton was born in a log cabin on the bank of the Des Moines river, a mile west of Bentonsport, Iowa, April 17, 1847, and died at midnight in the town named, Dec. 1, 1913, aged 66 years, 7 months and 14 days. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Burton, died several years ago.

While a young girl she attended school near her home in what is known as the Shepherd district and at the Academy of Bentonsport. She was a girl an active and faithful member of the Presbyterian church and as lon as her health permitted did earnest work in church and Sunday school.

While in the parental home she was devoted to her parents and did much to aid her mother in caring for the younger children of the famil. During the later years of her life she united with the Advent church and remained a member of it until called by death.

At the age of 37 she was married to Calvin Smith of Kansas City, Mo., and after becoming a widow she returned to Bentonsport to spend the remainder of her days. She died of heart trouble, with which she was afflicted many years. She was a lady of excellent character and was highly esteemed by all her acquaintance.

The surviving brothers and sisters are Wm. V. Burton of St. Louis, Mo.; Dr. Benj. Burton of Colorado and Martha Virginia Burton of Clinton, Iowa, the last named being with her for two weeks pior and at the time of her death. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon, Dec. 4, Rev. Hughes preaching the sermon. The interment was by the side of her parents in the Bentonsport cemetery.
