John Downing.

John Downing was born in Licking Co., Ohio, Nov. 1, 1831, and died at his home in Bentonsport, Ia., Feb 15, 1910.

He came to Missouri with his parents when 4 yrs of age and at the age of 10 yr came to Van Buren Co. where he resided until his death, except 2 yrs spent in Cal. having "crossed the plains" with ox team in 1861, remaining 2 yrs, returning to Ia. by way of water to New York thence to his old home in Van Buren Co.

He was married to Nancy Hellyer in 1865, and to them were born nine children two, Thomas M. who died in infancy and Mrs. Daisy Bailey who died 2 1/2 yrs ago preceded him to the great beyond. He is survived by a wife and 7 children. Four sons: John E. of Selma, Ross L. of Bentonsport, Jas. C. of Grand Forks, N. Dak., Geo. B. of Rock Island, Ill., and three daughters, Mrs. C.T. Ruble of Bentonsport, Mrs. J.O. Murphy of Eldon, and Miss Iva E. of Tipton, All except Jas. were present in his last illness and death.

Mr. Downing has been in failing health for several years, the last 3 years of his life being full of suffering. In this last sickness he bore it patiently till the end.

Funeral services were held at Chequest Presbyterian church 6 miles north of Keosauqua conducted by Rev. Wood of Lebanon. Interment in Chequest Cemetery.
