Cooley died at his home in Farmington at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 18 days, and was buried Thursday Nov. 9, the funeral being conducted by the Odd Fellows, of which order he was a member. Dr. Cooley was born March 19, 1814, in Whately, Franklin Co., Mass., where he lived until 22 years of age, when he moved to Brownhelm, Lorain Co., Ohio, teaching school for several years, and in 1848 he came to Farmington, Iowa, became a member of the order of Odd Fellows that year and was Grand Patriarch of the Grand Lodge in 186-162[sic] and Grand Master in 1862-63, and was representative to the Grand Lodge of the United States in 1864 and 1865. In 1860-61 he was county superintendent of schools. He was postmaster of Farmington from 1864 to 1870 and was reappointed in 1871 and held that position for a number of years afterwards. He was married Aug. 3, 1848 to Selena C. Hammond who died in 1849. In 1850 he was married to Eliza J. Thome who died in 1851. In 1854 he married Lucy H. Ingram who died in 1869. In 1870 he married Nancy C. McCrary of Vernon. Two children, a son and a daughter, were born to the third marriage, Lyndon H. and Clara I., both yet living. He was a member of the Congregational church. Dr. Cooley was a good man and was held in high esteem by his acquaintances. Until enfeebled by old age he took much interest in public affairs and was an active and earnest republican. Farmington citizens will miss the kindly face of this old neighbor.
