OBITUARY SKETCH

James P. Davis was born to Elizabeth and John C. Davis at Moundsville, Va., Feb. 11, 1844. After a year at Moundsville the family moved to Burlington, Iowa, and the home was made ther until the subject of this sketch had reached the age of 14, when a new home was established in Edina, Mo. (There is a illegible handwitten note at the end of this paragraph.)

At the age of twenty James P. Davis was united in marriage to Miss Alice M. Sullivan, at LaBelle, Mo., Apr. 14, 1864 and the young couple settled in Bonaparte four years later, on Aug. 19.

At the age of 17, deceased began his career as school teacher and was principal of the public schools of Bonaparte for six years. He was educated for the bar and was admitted when but 21 years of age. But later he gave this up for the occupation mentioned above. Later he was appointed postmaster and we are informed was serving his sixth term when death overtook him.

In 1874 he became a member of the Presbyterian church of this city and continued faithful until the end.

He leaves to mourn the loss his faithful wife, son Harry and daughter Mrs. Lola Spencer; four brothers, Leroy, Lewis and Geo. Davis of Missouri; Dr. Davis of Hamilton, Ill., and two sisters: Sarah Hanson and Kate Jackson, Hamilton, Ill.

The body was taken to Hamilton, Ill., at noon for interment and the following Odd Fellows accompanied the remains as pall bearers: J.W. Persinger, Walt. Wilson, Wm. Lackey, W.A. Steadman, Art Rounds and Curtis Anson.
