John Harverly Barker was born Sept. 8, 1873, and died at his home in Washington township, Oct. 24, 1902, aged 29 years, 1 month and 16 days. He was born near the home where he died, his parents being Mr. and Mrs. Arnold C. Barker, who survive and reside neaqr the late home of the deceased. Of a family eight children he was the second son. He completed his education at the public schools of Birmingham. At the age of 13 he united with the Presbyterian church near Mt. Zion, of which he was a faithful member the rest of his life, serving as superintendent of the Sunday school of that church for five years. He was united in marriage to Miss Mertis Cupp, Sept. 8, 1898, one son being born to them who, with the sorrowing wife and mother, survives. He took sick on Saturday, Oct. 18, with appendicitis and on the Wednesday following an operation was performed, but it failed to save him, his death making the second break in the family circle with the past three years. He bore his suffering with christian patience, desiring to live for the sake of his wife and child, but resigned to God's will. He was a good man and held in high esteem by all his acquaintances. He was of a quiet and earnest nature. He was trusted by his fellow men, and though young in years had served as clerk of his township and also assessor, and was a nominee on the republican ticket at the time of his death for township trustee. A good man has gone and he is mourned not only by his parents, his wife and other relatives but by a large circle of acquaintances. The funeral was held at the Miller Chapel at 2 p.m, last Sunday, the attendance being very large. Impressive services were held, Rev. McElheinny preaching the sermon, after which the body was laid to rest in the Chapel cemetery.
