Obituary of Mrs. Mary Ebert

MARY JANE EASTER, daughter of Jacob and Nancy Easter, was born near Old Town, Virginia, September 20, 1829, when ten years of age she moved with her parents to Summerville, Penn., where she grew to womanhood.

In the year 1851, at the age of 22, she united in marriage with Thomas D. Ebert, and soon after came to Iowa, settling in Van Buren county, coming by boat from Pittsburg, Pa. to Keokuk, Iowa, and from thence to Birmingham by stage, settling on a farm six miles east of Birmingham. She spent all of her life since coming to this state in Van Buren county, except nine years spent in Fairfield, and was for forty-one years a resident of Birmingham. Her husband died on the 11th day of August, 1892.

Her home was blessed with eight children: Jacob Dempsey of Fairfield, Iowa; Minnie Huff of Portland, Ore.; Nannie J. Hugus of Birmingham; Mary E. Ebert of Quincy, Ill.; Alvin C. Ebert of Birmingham; Fannie Rhodes of Red Oak, Okla., all of whom were here when she took her departure. Two children, Lyda and Marshall died in childhood. She leaves beside her children, fifteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, and a large circle of friends.

When 18 years of age she gave her heart to God and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, and was a faithful christian to the end of her life. In speaking to Mrs. Alvin Ebert of her christian life, she remarked that it is nice to know that one has served the Lord all their life.

She received a stroke of paralysis on Monday, the 5th, and passed to her rest and home beyond on Monday evening the 12th, at 5:45, being 88 years, 10 months and 28 days old, and 67 years a servant of her Lord and Master.

Thirty-eight children, grandchildren and near relatives followed the remains from the residence to the M. E. church.
