A Noted Educator.
An announcement of the death of James J. Dofflemyer, which caused profound sorrow among his old Van Buren friends, was made in these columns last week. His early home was at Bonaparte and, being an energetic youth, he walked to Bentonsport to receive instructions from Prof. Weyer. He began his chosen profession teaching in the schools of this county, his first school being taught in the Benj. Ketcham district, when he was nineteen years of age. While teaching the Birmingham schools he married Miss Mary Pitkin. From there he went to Farmington, where he remained until elected Prin. Of the First Ward school in Keokuk. After a few years in Keokuk, he was chosen superintendent of the Marion schools where he remained for ten years. Last spring Prof. Dofflemeyer was promoted to the superintendency of the Boone schools with a greatly increased salary.
The wife and two children, Jamie aged about eleven years, and Marian, aged four years, are still living; Mr. Dofflemyer's father, a brother Joe, and two sisters, Miss Jessie Dofflemyer and Mrs. Schaeffer are also left to mourn the loss.
Because of his success as an instructor, and his prominence at the meetings of the Iowa Educational Association, there are few educators in this state who were not acquainted with him. He was a self made man.
