DOUDS - Raphel E. Smith, 86, retired farmer, died at his home in Douds at 1:50 p.m. Tuesday.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at People's Church in Batavia with the Rev. Kermit Black officiating. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery north of Batavia. Memorials to the Cancer Fund may be left at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds.
Smith was born June 19, 1895 near Abingdon, the son of Ellsworth and Nettie DeGood Smith. On Jan. 17, 1918 he married Mary N. Miller in Ottumwa.
They farmed in Wapello, Jefferson and Van Buren counties before retiring and moving to Douds in 1970.
Surviving are his wife; five sons, Dale of Marshalltown, Donald of Libetyville, Gerald of Batavia, Floyd of Davenport and Keith E. of Douds; five daughters, Lulu Bell Collett of Hedrick, Alice Lee of N. Liberty, Dorothy Bates of Ft. Madison, Virginia Faulkner of Montrose and Anna Marie Trout of Ft. Collins, Colo.; 32 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Minta Gobble of Eldon, Grace Odum of Fairfield, Maude Nordyke of Abingdon and one brother, John Smith of California.
He was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Douds.
