Obituary of Mrs. Mary Rockefellow

Mrs. Mary J. Rockefellow died at a hospital in Keokuk, Jan. 6, 1917, aged 74. She was born in Clarion county, Penn, Nov. 28, 1842, her parents being David R. and Nancy J. Craig. In 1864 she accompanied her parents to Iowa, locating in Vernon township, Van Buren county. She was married to DeWitt Rockefellow in 1869, and their home was in Vernon township until 1890 when they moved to Bonaparte, where the husband passed away in 1905. To Mr. and Mrs. Rockefellow five children were born -- one son and four daughters. The son, Walter, died in 1890. The daughters all survive and are: Mrs. Belle McComb, of Harrisburg township, this county; Mrs. Loretta Mankin, of Brookpark, Minn.; Mrs. Carrie Lowe, of Bonaparte, Iowa, and Mrs. Alice McCay, of Chicago, Ill. There are also thirteen grand children and four great grand children. Mrs. Rockefellow is also survived by seven brothers, viz: George H. Craig, of Keosauqua, Io; David R. of Curllsville, Penn.; James N. of Davenport, Io.; Harry C. of Curllsville, Penn.; Charles B. M. of Bengough, Canada; Joseph W. of Puyallup, Wash., and Andrew M. of Tacoma, Wash.

The body was brought from Keokuk to the home in Bonaparte, where a short service was held at Story Chapel, in Vernon township, Tuesday, Jan. 9, conducted by Rev. Peterson of Bonaparte; the interment being in the Thompson cemetery. Mrs. Rockefellow was a noble woman and her taking off is a loss not only to the loved ones of her family, but to the entire community where she had lived so long.
