RAY SCOVEL IS HUN'S VICTIM
---------------
JEFFERSON COUNTY BOY DIES OF WOUNDS RECEIVED IN ACTIONFairfield, Nov. 26-Relatives here, heave just received the sad news of the death of Ray Scovel, which occurred on October 20 at a base hospital in France and was the result of severe wounds which he received in action with the Yanks when they were putting the finishing touches to the greatest war that the world has ever seen.
Raymond Scovel left Fairfield in May 1918 as an alternate, going because of the fact that another did not appear when called. He left his home willingly with only a few hours notice and probably because of the other man gave up his life, for it is practically certain that he would not have reached the scene of action as quickly if he had been allowed to await his turn and go.
He was about thirty years of age and beside his widowed mother, Mrs. Hester Scovel of Libertyville, leaves two brothers, Ira and H.L. Scovel of Libertyville and one sister Mrs. Elmer Metz of Glasgow. Two brothers Frank and Loren L. Scovel with their father have preceded him in death. A nephew Calvin Scovel of this city is a member of Hospital Unit R, attached to Base Hospital No. 82 in France.
His mother has been notified that Mr. Scovel was severely wounded and in the hospital. He was struck in the leg and the side by a shell and was badly hurt. However only a few days ago his mother has a letter from him in which he bade her cheer up and said that he was getting along nicely.
