Hoffer rites

STOCKPORT - John W. Hoffer, 83, longtime resident of the Stockport community, died at 11:55 a.m. Monday at the University Hospital in Iowa City where he had been a patient two days.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Stockport United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at Burlington.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield.

John W. Hoffer was born Aug. 27, 1898, in Johnson County, Kansas. He was the son of Charles E. and Ida May Reele Hoffer. His marriage to Norma E. Hobbisiefken took place Oct. 25, 1922, at Burlington.

Hoffer had farmed for 52 years before his retirement in the Stockport area. He was a member of the American Legion at Stockport, Workman Masonic Lodge No. 634, AF and AM; Order of Eastern Star Chapter 554, OES; Lions Club; he was a 32 degree Mason; a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Stockport United Methodist Church.

In addition to his widow Hoffer is survived by a daughter, Evelyn J. Tomkins, Burlington; and a son, Donald L. Hoffer, Stockport.

Other survivors include three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; a sister, Laura Freeman, Nashville, Ill., and a brother, Gilbert Hoffer, Cheyenne, Wyo.
