Ray Barnett

FORT MADISON --- Ray Barnett, 101, died Monday evening at the home of his daughter in Fort Madison.

He was born June 27, 1891, in Keosauqua, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Priscella Huffman Barnett. He married Linnet Slutts on Nov. 15, 1915, in Keosauqua. She died Aug. 20, 1981.

Barnett was a retired farmer and Hillsboro city employee and spent most of his life in the Hillsboro community. He had made his home with his daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Gordon Faught in Fort Madison.

Surviving are six daughters, Georgia Ellis of Keota, Leona Sanderson of Hillsboro, Beulah Shilling and Anna Workman of Fairfield, Charlotte Wallerick of Danville, and Faught; two sons, James of Fairfield and Lex of Exmore, Va.; 36 grandchildren; 132 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis Marshall and Vera Heisel both of Stockport; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Robert and Rex; one daughter, Marie; three brothers, James, Floyd and Harl; and two sisters, Eva and Chloe.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hillsboro Cemetery, the Rev. Ed Parker officiating. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield. A memorial has been established.
