DEATH OF REV. C.R. NORTON

Rev. C.R. Norton died at his home in Glendale, California, last week after a lingering illness. Rev. Norton was well known in Milton having been pastor of the M.E. church here for five years, from about 1885 to 1890. He had lived in California for about 25 years. He was a man of high ideals, kind of heart and he will leave a memory that will long be remembered by those who knew him.

We take the following from Glendale, California, papers concerning his death:

“Surrounded by his wife and family, Rev. Charles R. Norton, aged G. A.R. Chaplain for the Glendale post peacefully passed away at twilight yesterday evening at his home at 801 East Wilson. At his beside{sic} were Mrs. Amanda J. Norton, his four sons, W.R. Norton, C.C. Norton, M.E. Norton and Ernest Norton, and his two daughters, Mrs. Lester Jones and Mrs. Claude Hilliard.

Rev. Norton has been a resident of the city for the past 23 years, living at his home on East Wilson for the greater part of this time, and has served the G.A.R. of Glendale as chaplain for the past 13 years.

Was Militant Christian.

With him passed on one of the best types of militant Christians his generation has produced. His patriotic interest in the welfare of his country in war and peace, his warm heart which made him the friend of all with whom he came in contact, his constant readiness to extend the helping hand, have endeared him to every community in which he has lived and every organization of which he has been a member. His life left its impress upon all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock in the First Methodist church of Glendale which Mr. Norton founded 23 years ago they will be conducted by Rev. J.C. Kendricks of Pasadena, who officiated at the wedding of deceased, and who will be assisted by the church pastor, Dr. Lincoln A. Ferris and Dr. Clyde M. Crist, a former pastor.

The grave in Forest Lawn cemetery, officers of the N.P. Banks post G.A.R. will conduct the ritualistic service of the order. Six comrades who are members of the post will serve as honorary pallbearers. The L.G. Scovern company will be in charge of the funeral.”
