JOHN H. LEMMON

John A. Lemmon, son of Marcus and Cleopatra Lemmon was born September 6th, 1846, in Van Buren co., Iowa, and departed this life February 14th, 1929, being at the time of his death 82 years, 5 months and 8 days of age. John spent his early years in Van Buren county while the remaining of his long life he lived in and near Troy, Iowa, with the exception of six years spent in Emporia, Kansas. At the early age of sixteen he enlisted in the 7th Iowa Cavalry in the national strife of the Civil war, serving his country faithfully for three years. At the close of the war he received an honorable discharge.

In the year 1872, John Lemmon was united in marriage to Martha Ellen Davis and this union was blessed by seven children: A. C. Lemmon, Troy; Mrs. J. B. Vorhis, Troy; Mrs. Ray Connor, Chillicothe, Mo.; I. H. Lemmon, Troy, Iowa; Mrs. H. E. Wilford, Ft. Madison; Mrs. W. M. Lawrence, Milton; and Clay Lemmon, who died an accidental death at the age of 23. Besides his wife and six children, he is survived by three brothers, Lyman and Roni of Pulaski; and William of Pittsburg, Kansas; fourteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

More than three decades ago Mr. Lemmon united with the Christian church and continued in that faith until the end. He was a kind and loving father and husband and a good neighbor. For his going, time is poorer but eternity is richer. Rest on in peace beloved! Joy comes in the morning.

Funeral services were held from the Troy church on Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. J. C. Bruvold, with burial in Troy cemetery.
