Maria Oakshett was born in Southwick, England, March 13, 1826 and there grew to womanhood. She moved to London, England, in 1848, and was married to Harry Humphreys, February 10, 1850, came to American in May 1850, and settled in Bonaparte, Iowa, where they lived continuously until her death having lived in the house in which she died 43 years.
She was the mother of two children, John and Jennie who, with her husband survive her. She was a member of the Episcopal church and lived a consistent Christian, bearing with great patience her suffering, always trying to cheer her own. She was an affectionate wife, loving mother and kind neighbor; always ready to help the needy as one who lived not for herself alone.
She leaves to mourn their loss her husband, son and daughter, two sisters and one brother who reside in England.
Mrs. Humphreys was honored by all who knew her. She treated every one with the utmost kindness. She was affectionate and always ready to do a kind act. Her sickness was long and tedious but she bore it without complaint.
Truly a noble woman gone to her long reward.
The funeral occurred Sunday afternoon from the Baptist church, Rev. Barber, of Eldon, officiating, and the remains were followed to their last resting place in the Bonaparte cemetery by a large concourse of relatives and friends.
