Jasper Hoskin
Jasper, the eldest son and last surviving member of the children of Neri and Mary Angeline Hoskin, was born January 25, 1854, and departed from this life February 21, 1938, age 84 years and 27 days.
He was born on the farm homesteaded by his father and where he spent his entire life. His father passed away when he was ten years of age, being the eldest of four children the responsibility of caring for the family depended largely upon his efforts. He was quiet and unassuming. He never married but made a home and cared for his aged mother until her death. He then made his home with his brother, Neri, until 1918 when he returned to his old home and has since been cared for by his nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Hoskin. At an early age he united with the Presbyterian church at Lebanon and later was one of the twelve to establish the Mt. Zion church, where he was a faithful worker until this congregation united with the Home Prairie church.
His father’s family consisted of two sisters, Lydia, who died in infancy, and Inez, who passed away in early womanhood, one one[sic] brother, Neri, who passed away in 1933. Also the following half-brothers and sisters, who preceded him in death: William Hoskin, Eliza Hoskin Brooks, Harrison Hoskin, Dwight Hoskin, Omar Hoskin, Mary Anny Hoskin Roberts, Rhoda Hoskin Gableman, Amanda Hoskin, Eunice Hoskin and Monterery Hoskin.
Service at Cantril Methodist church was in charge of Rev. David Eastburn. Music by John Wilson, Floyd, Ezra and Ora Williams and Mrs. Earl Davis. Pallbearers were Willis Roberts, George Cochran, Frank Anderson, Dick Hesler, Hubert and Ivan Gilbert. Burial was in Hoskin cemetery in charge of undertaker, Harold Catcott, of Birmingham.
Relatives and friends from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. Cornellia Hoskin, Mr. and Mrs. Neri Hoskin [NOTE: The list of relatives and friends is unreadable in sections. Partial transcription was made where possible.] …and Wilbur…and Harry Lawton of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Garner and son, Lawrence, Winterset; Mr. and Mrs. A.I. Stump and Charles Stump, Libertyville; Mr. and Mrs. O.C. Day, Bloomfield; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Carpenter, Milton; Mrs. Edgar Miller and daughter …Lou of Mt. Sterling.
