Henry B. Edmonson
Henry Bascom Edmonson was born in Scott county, Ky., Nov. 26, 1842 and came with his parents the following year to Van Buren county, where he resided continuously until his death which occurred Saturday, Sept. 17, at the age of 67 years, 9 months, and 22 days.
In 1862 Mr. Edmonson enlisted in the service of his county and as a member of Co. I, Nineteenth Iowa, infantry, spent three years in defense of the Stars and Stripes, receiving counts in battle, from which he never entirely recovered, altogether he enjoyed many years of comparatively good health. He was married Jan. 2, 1868, to Miss Sarah L. Woods and brought his bride home on the farm on which they lived happily for more than forty years.
He was honest and just in all his dealings with others, generous to all with cause and respected by all who knew him. He always took an interest in civic affairs, and though no a politician, served for six years as county supervisor. He was a lover of his home and delighted in extending its hospitalizes to his many friends.
He was a member of Shriver Post No. 177, GAR of Vernon, and took great pleasures in meeting with war comrades, having several times attended the National Encampment.
However, he was especially interested in the annual reunions of his regiment, and in the Co. I picnics which a few years ago became an annual event.Although never exactly robust, Mr. Edmonson was never ill until about eighteen months ago when he met with an accident once which time his health has been ailing. For the past year he was, most of the time, in a precarious condition, during which he received the constant, tender, and watchful care of his devoted wife and the niece, who has filled the place as a loving and dutiful daughter.
Besides his sorrowing wife and the niece, Miss Fannie Glascock, who has attended the house since childhood, the deceased is survived by two sisters F. Freeman and Irene Campbell, a number of nieces , nephews and a host of friends.
