Elizabeth Hankey
Elizabeth Fatherson, daughter of Thomas and Martha Fatherson, was born in Wydenbury, England, May 31, 1816. She was married February 24, 1837 to Wm. Hankey of Wydenbury, Eng. To this union were born three children, two of whom survive, Mrs. Mary McDonald of Washington and Mrs. Sarah Hoskins of Keosauqua, Iowa. John, their only son, died at the age of 6 years in England. In April, 1855, Mr. and Mrs. Hankey, with their two daughters, came to Iowa direct from England, locating a home close to the present home of her daughter Sarah. Mr. Hankey departed this life January 6, 1876. The last 9 years of her life the deceased’s home has been with her son and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Hoskins, who have shown their love in every kindness and devotion to her happiness and comfort in every way possible. Surrounded by this family and a few friends, she passed to her Heavenly home early on the morning of April 26, 1905, aged 89. Realizing that she was starting on this last journey she assured her dear ones that all was well with her.
Elizabeth Hinkey[sic] was of a long lifed and large family, having 12 brothers and sisters, all of whom, except one, the youngest brother, having preceded her to the better home. Geo. Fatherson of Mt. Sterling is the last of this family. She leaves 8 grandchildren, 18 great grand-children, and 1 great-great-grandchild, and several nephews and nieces. She was baptized in Banbury Cathedral, church of England, but at an early age united with the Wesleyan or Methodist church. After coming to Iowa she united with the Methodist Episcopal church, living always in the faith. She was a close Bible student all her life. She was enabled to enjoy this Bible study to the full, being blessed with retention of all her faculties, a clear mind, an unusually good memory, and above all perfect eyesight, never having been obliged to wear glasses. All these gifts she accepted reverently as the direct blessing of God. The purity of her christian life was attested by her cheerfulness, as well as by the close friendships that were always hers from those who knew her best. Funeral service was conducted at the home of Nelson Hoskins by Revs. Ingham and Carson, after which she was laid to rest in the near by cemetery.
