DR. MAXWELL DEAD.
Prominent Keokuk Physician Passed
Away After Brief Illness.Keokuk, Aug 3. -- Dr. Thomas J. Maxwell, a well known Keokuk citizen, one of the most prominent physicians and surgeons in the west, a soldier through the civil war and a man who commanded the respect of all those he met, died at the family home, 727 North Ninth street, Tuesday night about 9 o'clock. Around his bedside were the members of his family.
His death brought to a close the career of one of the most active and prominent surgeons of Iowa and his name will stand through the ages in the medical world. While physical disabilities were gradually breaking him down the immediate cause of his death was a stroke of paralysis which came upon him over a week ago and he gradually grew worse, lapsing into unconsciousness Monday. He was 68 years and 5 months old.
Dr. Maxwell was one of the most active and well known surgeons in Iowa. He was the originator of a method for treating intracapsular fracture of the femur, which has been worked to success upon many cases, and for this alone his name has gained wide-spread prominence throughout the entire medical world.
He was about four years ago president of the State Medical society, and at the time of his death was a fellow of the International Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Until the last year he held the chair of surgery in the Keokuk Medical college, College of Physicians and Surgeons, resigning the position on account of failing health. The burial services were held today.
