Died, at the residence of her son, W.M. Tharp in Mt. Sterling, Van Buren county, Iowa, on Thursday evening, Sept. 21, 1893, Mrs. Hulda Tharp, aged 96 years, 5 months, and 20 days. The deceased, whose maiden name was Cox, was born in Harrison county, West Virginia, March 31, 1797. While yet a resident of her native state she was united in marriage to Mr. H.D. Tharp, June 4, 1817. Thirteen children, five sons and eight daughters came to bless this union, of whom one son and five daughters survive her. In 18*3, (fold in paper, could be 1853) with her husband and children she came to Iowa and settled near Mt. Sterling, Van Buren county, where she was deprived of her husband by the hand of death in 1858. Early in life she gave her heart to Christ and united with the Methodist Episcopal church in which communion she died after a membership extending over more than eighty-five years. Mr. W.M. Tharp, at whose home she died, is the sole surviving son and also the youngest child of the family. Her funeral took place from the M.E. church in Mt. Sterling, Sunday, Sept. 24, 1893, services conducted by Rev. C. W. Wilson , of Ottumwa, a former pastor, assisted by Rev. C.W. Evans. Notwithstanding the falling rain the church was crowded to its utmost limit with friends and former neighbors anxious to pay this last tribute of respect to one universally respected and beloved. The body was buried by the side of her husband in the Harness cemetery. Mt. Sterling’s beautiful, silent city of the dead.
