ALEXANDER May 5, 1875, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Seth Fordyse,
Mr. John Alexander, in the 77th year of his age.

The subject of this notice was born in Bourbon Co., Kentucky, July 27th, 1798.
Two years after, he removed with his father to Warren Co. Tennessee, where he
lived until the year 1834. Having married he removed with his family at this
time to Schuyler Co., Ill and in 1838 came to Van Buren So., Iowa where he has
resided ever since. Mr. Alexander has led an active, useful life, having
filled various positions of honor and trust. He was chosen to represent Van
Buren Co. in the legislature and characterized his labors in that body by a
jealous regard for the interests of his constituents, always casting his
influence and vote on that side, which in his judgement, would result in the
greatest good to the greatest number. He also was one of the pioneers of our
State and Co., and, in common with others who were here at that early day,
endured many hardships and privations in laying the foundation for that
prosperity and greatness which our Co. and State have attained. A good man has
gone home, and he will be sadly missed in the community in which he lived, for
he was ever ready to lend a helping hand to the worthy poor and to aid in all
undertakings calculated to better the condition of his fellow men. Truly can
it be said that the world is the better by his living in it. He leaves an aged
companion to mourn his loss, and, while she is now left alone in the world,
together they have traveled down the declivity of life ******* they have
nearly reached the four score years.
