J.C. DRAKE DIED FRIDAY AUGUST 30 IN MEMPHIS
From Memphis Democrat (MO), September 5, 1918, page 1, col. 1

J.C. Drake died at his home Jefferson and Lincoln streets, Friday morning, August 30th 1918 after an illness of one week. He was born April 27, 1835, in Hardin county, KY. He moved to Iowa in 1854, and came to Scotland county, MO, in 1855, living here until his death. On Dec. 20, 1860 he was married to Rebecca Leach. To this union five children were born, Charles C. of Bloomfield, IA, Alfred H. of Kirksville, MO, Viney M. and Harvey T. of Memphis, and Della A. of Denver, CO.

Mr. Drake united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church in early youth, and was known as living a sonsistent Christian life through all the years that followed. He was a devoted member of the Memphis Presbyterian church the last years of his life; and though defective hearing prevented his enjoying all the service of his church, yet he was so regular in attendance, for one of his years, as to be an example to those younger and able to hear perfectly. His life illustrated the meaning of Mat 7:30, "By their fruits (or works) ye shall know them." He was of a family of six brothers and seven sisters. Of these, with his wife and children, there survive him: John T. of Downing, MO; Daniel Miller of Memphis; Minor P. of Trenton, MO; Tena M. of Humansville, MO; and Judy E. of Kansas City.

The funeral services were conducted in the First Presbyterian church by the pastor, Dr. F.M. Hawley, Monday afternoon, September 2, 1918, and at the grave, in the city cemetery, by the Masonic Order.

The face of James C. Drake was quite familiar to all of our people. He had settled in Scotland county at an early day and was widely known as a man of affairs and as one deeply concerned about the welfare of his community. For years he had been a devout member of the Presbyterian church and his life was the consistent with his profession. He was of an affable nature and was genuinely liked and respected by all with whom he came into contact. He had lived to a ripe old age and his life was full of good works and words. The bereaved family and aged wife have the sympathy of all in this hour of sadness.
