DeWitt Rockefellow was born in Orange county, N.Y., December 1, 1841. He was the son of Walter and Elizabeth [Ellis] Rockefellow and was educated in Middletown, N.Y. He followed the profession of school teaching for some years.He removed to Van Buren county, Iowa, in 1865 where he engaged in farming for a number of years. He was married Feb. 18, 1869 to Mary J. Craig at the home of her father, David R. Craig, Sr. in Vernon, now Henry township.
Five children were born to them of whom Walter, the eldest, died April 5, 1890. The remaining four girls are all living and were present at the funeral. They are Mrs. Geo. B. McComb of Keokuk, Mrs. Edwin Mankin of near Bonaparte, Miss Carrie Rockefellow, unmarried and living at home, Mrs. Geo. B. McCay of Chicago.
The funeral services were held at Story Chapel in Vernon township Feb. 1, the Interrment taking place at the Thompson cemetery. Other relatives present at the funeral were Mrs. Geo. Ellis and Mrs. Fred Anderson of Keosauqua, Mr. Rockefellow's cousins, and Mrs. Rockefellows brothers, Geo. A. Craig and family of Henry township, James N. Craig of Farmington, and David R. Craig of Brainerd, Minn.; her nephew, W. A. Craig and wife of Keosauqua; and niece, Mrs. Jennie Rigsby of Henry township.
