Keziah Brinkly was born in Bath Co., Va., Feb. 22, 1820. She was married to Robert S. Carter, May 10, 1838. Of the five children born to this union two, a son and daughter, died in infancy. The family moved to Bentonsport, Iowa, May 16, 1850, where they afterwards resided. Her husband died April 12, 1896. For eight years she had been an invalid from a stroke of paralysis. This finally was the cause of her death, which occurred May 1, 1901, at the home of her son Alexander Carter. Mrs. Carter united with the M. E. church at Beverly, Va., in the early forties, under the preaching of Rev. Henry Clay Dean, who was pastor of that church at that time. She became a charter member of the Bentonsport Methodist Episcopal church, and, so far as is known, is the last of the charter members to enter the eternal home. She was an active member of the church until she became an invalid. Her home was ever open to receive the new pastor as he came to his new field of labor. Here she arranged for pastor and people to meet and get acquainted with each other. In the early days, when persons from all parts of the circuit, and adjoining circuits, came to the quarterly meetings, her home was ever open to receive guests and welcome them. She died in the faith, trusting in the care and love of her Heavenly Father. Thus a light has been removed from earth to shine more brightly in the heavenly kingdom.
