Mrs. A. F. Parker

Carrie Grages, daughter of Henry B. and Lizzie Grages, was born July 21, 1870 in Van Buren county, Iowa, married to A. F. Parker May 24, 1896. Died February 28, 1906, at 9:30 a.m., at San Antonio, Texas. She leaves a husband, mother, six sisters and three brothers and many dear friends to mourn her loss. The funeral took place at her late home, 908 Calhoun street in West Liberty, March 3 at 2:30 p.m. with services conducted by Rev. J. A. Boatman. The sermon was taken from the 14th chapter of St. John, which was selected by the deceased. The Methodist choir rendered several songs which she also selected. Mrs. Parker, in her kind and sympathetic nature, had endeared herself to many in West Liberty, especially the old and suffering; numerous instances will be recalled of her sacrifices in this respect. The sick especially had a friend in her, no sacrifice on her part was ever too great to relieve the suffering of the afflicted.

There were in attendance at her funeral, her husband and four sisters; Miss Jennie Grages of West Liberty, Mrs. Lizzie McKinney of Bentonsport, Mrs. Frank Mitchell and Mrs. Alice Shriver of Bonaparte and Mrs. J. H. DeWalt of Cedar Rapids.

A beautiful floral wreath was presented by the train despatcher [sic] and operators of the Rock Island Railway system at Des Moines, a floral pillow from the employees of McCarthy’s restaurant and the employees of the depot, where Mr. Parker is employed as operator, and a beautiful offering from Mrs. Edna Harrison of Canton, Ill., also numerous offerings from Cedar Rapids, and from friends and relatives in West Liberty. Mrs. Parker was not afraid to die, but wanted to go and be at rest. Her only desire to live was that she might be able to take care of “Park” when sickness and affliction would compet him to give up his life.

At her request the pall bearers were Messrs. Tom McCarthy, W. F. Cooper, Will Shaw, Geo. Buckley, Corwin Reynolds, and Lysie Cooper.
