Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 8, 1974, from the United Methodist Church in Jefferson for Dirk W. Miller, 66, former longtime Jefferson Community High School vocational agriculture teacher.
The Rev. Peter J. Westra, Minister of First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson, officiated. Mrs. Curtis Wilson was organist.
Casket bearers were Anthony Andrusyk, Harvey Swartz, Howard Olson, Dan Russell, James Ball and Ray Dillard. Interment was in Jefferson Cemetery.
Dirk W. Miller, son of George and Lucia Gaass Miller, was born June 5, 1908, at Bonaparte. He grew to manhood near his birthplace, attending rural grade school and graduating from Bonaparte High School with the class of 1925.
On June 6, 1938, he married Jean Nelson at Corning. They were the parents of two children, Michael and Jane.
Soon after Dirk graduated from Iowa State University, the couple moved to Jefferson where Mr. Miller taught vocational agriculture until his retirement from the Jefferson Community School system in May of 1974.
During World War Two Dirk served his country as an officer with the United States Navy
At the time of his death he was teaching vocational agriculture at Carroll and Kuemper High Schools in Carroll.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson where he taught Sunday school for 10 years and was an Elder. Dirk was also a member of the Jefferson Rotary Club and past president of the Iowa Vocational Teachers’ Association.
Mr. Miller died Friday in Omaha, Nebraska.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; his son Michael and daughter-in-law Rita of Anchorage, AK; his daughter, Jane, of Ann Arbor, MI; a granddaughter, Heather Miller; one brother, Louis Miller of Davenport; one sister, Mrs. Edith Monger of Omaha, NE; and an uncle, Edward S. Gaass of Prarie City.
