Died at his home near Bonaparte, at 10 o'clock Friday evening Feb. 28, 1890. Mr. Dennis Haney was born in Ireland in 1822 being at the time of his death about 68 years old. Mr. Haney enlisted at Philadelphia and served three years in the Mexican War. He was promoted to 2nd Sargeant, and is familiarly called Sargeant Haney. At the time of his death, he was drawing a pension as a veteran of that war. He was in several noted battles and at the capture of the city of Mexico. He was discharged at old Point Comfort, Md. Received a land warrant at Washington, and came to Iowa in 1848, and located his land in Monroe county. He went to California in the spring of 1849. He returned to Bonaparte in 1852 and shortly afterwards bought the farm on which he still lives. He was married to Susanna McClure, Feb. 22, 1854. Six children were born to them. The wife, two daughters and two sons, are left to mourn the loss of a a kind husband and father. Mr. Haney was a charter member of the Masonic lodge of Bonaparte, which body took charge of the funeral, and laid to rest in Bonaparte cemetery Sunday afternoon, the body of their friend and brother.
