Maurice Stanley Cummings, Sr., 61, of rural Basco, Illinois died at 5:35 a.m. Wednesday, January 12, 1983 in his home after a long illness.
He was born June 19, 1921 at Bonaparte, a son of Clarence Earl and Fern Gertrude Thompson Cummings. He lived in the community until after his marriage. He married Nellie May Summers on September 7, 1940 in Missouri. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Kent (Ellen) Coultas of Bridgeport, Illinois and Cara Sue at home; three sons, Maurice S., Jr. of Bonaparte, Robert D. of Basco, and James C. of Robinson; one brother, Harold G. of Cedar Rapids; one niece, Sharon Patterson of Finn Rock, Oregon and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one infant granddaughter.
He was a member of the Methodist faith. He had worked at Foote Mineral in Keokuk from 1965-1978, and also was a farmer. He served in the United States Naval Service during World War II.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 15 at the Lamporte Funeral Home in Hamilton, Illinois and were conducted by the Rev. Von L. Waggoner. Burial was in Bonaparte Cemetery. A memorial has been established in his name at his home.
