Eliza Brown Coffman 1821-1902

Eliza Brown was born in Shelby Co. Ohio on the 9th day of Oct. 1821 and died after an illness of 13 weeks at her home 705 Bashaw Street, Ottumwa, Iowa, at 6 p.m. June 13, 1902. Her age was 80 years, 8 months and 4 days.

At the age of 12 years she moved with her parents to Fountain Co., Indiana where she grew to womanhood. On May 31, 1840 she was married to W. H. Coffman, they moved to Washington Co., Iowa, the same year. From there they moved to Vernon, Van Buren Co.

In 1873 Wm. Coffman died, and his remains rest in the cemetery at Vernon. In 1892 Mrs. Coffman left Vernon and has spent the last ten years of her life with her children.

Mr. and Mrs. Coffman were blessed with 11 children 7 of whom have departed this life 4 and a brother of Mrs. Coffman whom she raised, survive and were present at the funeral.

She was a member of the Protestant Methodist church, and died in the faith.

The funeral service was conducted by R. Collier in the M. E. church at Vernon at 11, a.m. on June 15 and her remains were laid to rest in the Vernon cemetery by the remains of her husband, three sisters, one brother, two daughters and several grand children.

Being an old settler she was no stranger to the citizens of Vernon and she will be no stranger to the citizens of the city whither she has gone.
