JOSEPH ZENITH BARNETT.
Born in Maryland July 10, 1817,
and Died December 4, 1902,
at St. Joseph, Mo.
OBITUARY SKETCHJoseph Zenith BARNETT was born near Dublin in Harford Co., Maryland, July 10, 1817. When seven years old he was left fatherless, hence very early in life the care of his mother and younger brother devolved upon him. In 1840 he located in Ohio, his work being that of a contractor.
May 13, 1844, Mr. Barnett was united in marriage with Miss Salina D. Bosworth, and to this union were born four sons and four daughters. Three of these children, Mrs. Francis A. Reeser, Mrs. Bell L. Hyde and Truxton L. Barnett, together with the mother who departed this life October 7, 1879, preceeded [sic] him to the great beyond.
Mr. Barnett came to Missouri in 1852, being employed as government inspector on the locks at St. Francisville, and finally settled on a farm. 1883 he moved to Bonaparte and was associated with his son, John BARNETT, in the grain business. He returned to Missouri in 1894 where he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Kate C. Fore, until the first of September of this year when his health failed and he was taken to the hospital at St. Joseph. He died December 4, 1902, aged 85 years, 4 months and 24 days.
The children with their families who are left to mourn their loss are Mrs. Mary H. McKee of St. Francisville, Mo., John B. Barnett of Bonaparte, Mrs. Kate C. Fore of Wayland, Mo., George W. Barnett of Chicago, Ill., and Henry M. Barnett of Oakland, California.
The funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Saturday, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Jas. Fore, near St. Francisville, and interment was made in the St. Francisville cemetery. The pastor of the M. E. church of Wayland conducted the services.
It is difficult to do justice in words to the character of J. Z. Barnett. A man possessing a healthy physique, a superior intelligence and a mind that could grasp and comprehend clearly the most difficult situations, he exerted the influence of his strong, pure life towards that which was right.
During the time he lived in Bonaparte Mr. Barnett was intimately associated with the Presbyterian church acting as elder and also superintendent of the Sunday School for years. To the influence of his wife, who was also a beautiful character, he attributed his success.
Mr. Barnett's influence for good will be felt by all who know him, for he was a living example of the principles he advocated.
