Burned to Death

Merle, the son of Mrs. Isora Ruark of Farmington, died on Tuesday evening of last week, as the result of a terrible scalding received at noon that day. In commenting on the affair the News says: Mrs. Ruark was washing clothes and, her wash boiler having worn out, she was using a galvanized iron tub for a boiler. Just at noon she removed the tub, which was full of boiling water and clothes, from the stove and set it on the floor, so that she could put on her dinner. The children were all in the front part of the house. Not two minutes later Mrs. Ruark turned to lift the tub and found her little baby Merle, hardly two years old, sitting in the boiling water. The child began to scream, and the frantic mother grasped her child and removed its heavy woolen clothes, then applying flour to the burned and blistered body. The screams of the mother for help brought Mrs. Lucy Leavitt, who lives across the street from the daughter. Just then the older Ruark children arrived from school and were sent for physicians, who found that the child had been blistered from its shoulders to its ankles. When the apron which Mrs. Leavitt had thrown around the child was removed, the skin came with it, leaving the body one great red sore. How the accident happened is unknown to the mother.
