MRS. LAURA E. KISLING
Laura E. Abernathey was born near Cliffton, Greene County, Ohio, April 18, 1849. When she was but two years of age her parents moved to Iowa, and settled in the north part of Van Buren County, near the town of Birmingham, and after a short residence at that place moved to Scotland County, Missouri.
On March 11, 1866, she was united in marriage to James W. Kisling. Mr. and Mrs. Kisling resided in Scotland County, Missouri, until 1903, when they moved to Manitou, Oklahoma. Here on June 11, 1911, Mr. Kisling passed on to the better world. The following year Mrs. Kisling returned to her former place of residence. For some time she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Stephen Short of Milton, Iowa. In the spring of 1915 she purchased property in the south part of Cantril, and moved here, that she might be convenient to the church which she loved so much. Her life of patience and devotion made for her many friends, who held her in the highest esteem.
She was converted in early life, and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and was ever a faithful member.
Her Lord called her on Christmas morning, just as the sun was shedding her light over the eastern hills. She was ready to answer the call, as she was looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and Savior. The infirmities of the flesh had for some time been a hinderance to her, and she was waiting to be set free.
By human measurement, her earthly life was of seventy-two years, eight months and seven days; but He whose ways are not our ways has said, “and this is the record, that God hath give to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.”
She leaves on the shoal of time 7 children: Charles W. Kisling of Cantril; William A. Kisling of Cantril; John L. Kisling of Cantril; Benjamin F. Kisling of Cantril; Ira W. Kisling of Keosauqua; Mrs. Gertrude Short of Milton and Samuel M. Kisling of Snyder, Oklahoma. One daughter Hattie E. died Oct. 10, 1898, at the age of nine years. She leaves 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One brother, David Abernathey of Elberton, Washington, is left.
Brief services were held at the residence Tuesday afternoon, December 1921, after which the remains were conveyed to Prairie View, where appropriate funeral services were held in the Baptist Church, near the old home. The services were conducted by her pastor, the Rev. C. W. Cochran of Cantril. A fitting text which had been selected by Mother Kisling was used. “She hath done what she could.” Interment was made in the cemetery near the church. Servant of God, thou are crowned at last.
