OBITUARY
Nellie M. Hulbert was born Feb. 15, 1858, at Maquokata, Ia. She spent her girlhood days in Shenandoah Iowa. At this place she met and married Joseph L. Hogan in the year 1881. To this union were born four children, two girls and two boys. One girl died at birth and little May at 5 years of age, Curt L., the third child grew to young manhood and while making a trip around the world, a card was received by his mother in June 1909 from him in Tokio, Japan. This was the last word ever heard from him. The fourth child is Scott Hogan of Cantril. Her husband Joseph died June 14, 1908. After his death she with Scott took up a homestead in Tripp County, S. Dak. After proving up on their claim they came back to Iowa and moved to Cantril where she became acquainted with Geo. Short. They were married March 14, 1912. They were very happy and enjoyed one another’s companionship very much. Their home was always open to friends. She was taken sick while at the Eastern Star Chapter and the next day an operation was performed. She seemed to be doing well but the Lord beckoned and she departed at the age of 64 years, 10 months, and 7 days. She was the leading official in the Ladies Aid Society for several years, a work which she enjoyed and with untiring hands she labored for the Master’s service.
She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, George Short, her son, Scott Hogan and wife, one brother Frank Heilbert. Portland, Oregon; and the two little grandsons, Beryl and Charles Hogan and a host of relatives and friends.
