John McCarty 85; a resident of Ottumwa about 30 years died at 4 a.m. Sunday at Rest Haven nursing home, 509 West fourth St.

He was born at Mt. Zion; born April 1, 1868 the son of Mary Chaney and John McCarty. He lived most of his life in Wapello County. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Ottumwa.

Survivors include his wife Rhoda; six sons John McCarty,Wilford McCarty, Louis McCarty, Fred McCarty and Milt McCarty; all of Chicago, and Thomas McCarty of Mt. Zion; five daughters Mabel, Essie, Bernice and Thelma; all of Chicago, and Bessie of New York; and two brothers Thomas McCarty of Ottumwa, and Mike McCarty of Mt. Zion.

He was preceded in death by three children and three sisters.The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic church; the Rev. Richard Welsh in charge. Burial will be in the Forbs Cemetery at Mt. Zion.
