James E. Marshall was born in Monroe county, Virginia, May 9, 1826. He came to Iowa in 1850. His first marriage was to Martha Ann Godley and to this union were born two children, Charles and Walter, the mother dying in 1856. June 20, 1860, he was married to Nancy Chandler, and to this union four children were born, Irvin, Martha, Mary and Emma, all of whom have passed away except one, who with her mother and one step-brother is left to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. He was a member of the M. E. church from early boyhood until the year 1878, when he united with the Christian denomination at Selma, of which he remained a member to the end. He died of paralysis at the home of his daughter Mrs. Emma Roush, Nov. 11, 1903, in his seventy-eighth year. We pray that the christian comfort of hope and faith may abide with the wife and daughter and all his relatives. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Leando, Nov. 12, 1903, by Rev. A. W. Davis, after which the body was tenderly laid away in the Leando cemetery.
