David A. McGaffey

David A. McGaffey, 84, of 903 East 2nd Street (Washington, IA), died Sunday, Jan. 30, 1977, at the Washington Care Center. He had been failing in health for the past two years and seriously ill for 11 weeks.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home with the Rev. Harry Stultz officiating. Burial will be in Mapel Hill Cemetery at Birmingham. Military rites at the cemetery will be in charge of the VFW.

Mr. McGaffey was born Aug. 19, 1892, in Van Buren County, the son of Albert and Olive Vie Haney McGaffey. He was reared and educated in Van Buren County. On Sept. 7, 1919, he married Lucy May Kimmel at Keosauqua.

He was a veteran of World War I in the 349th infantry and was overseas for 18 months. When he was head of the VFW in 1945, he and Mrs. McGaffey started a committee to loan hospital equipment to the people of Washington County. It was headquartered at their home. In 1949 they began furnishing used furniture and clothing in cooperation with the welfare agencies of the community.

He was employed by the Rock Island Railroad and following that he worked for 23 years for the Shields Coal Company. He retired a number of years ago. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy McGaffey; three children, Mrs. Frank (Dorothy) Hudson of Fairfield; Gerald McGaffey of Washington and John McGaffey of Centerville; 16 grand and eight great-grandchildren.

He was proceded in death by one brother, Clarence, and one sister, Mrs. Ross (Carrie) Ramsey.
