The entire community was greatly shocked and grieved on learning last Saturday, that early in the morning, Mrs. Earl Snodgrass had passed away. Unknown to many she had been quite ill for several days and suffered much, growing worse Friday night she quietly passed away early Saturday morning.
Marie Muir, only daughter of R.L. and Jennie Muir, was born at Lebanon Iowa, May 12, 1895, and went home Saturday morning November 10, 1927, age thirty-two years, eight months, and seven days.
As a child she was a delight both in her home and to all who were associated with her, being always happy, kind and helpful. This same fine spirit was fully manifested in her mature life. Having completed the public school, she entered high school at Milton Iowa, and graduated with the class of 1915. There she formed friendships with associates with whom she was to live her life as wife and mother.
Being reared in a real Christian home she grew up in the Sunday school and church, and always loved her Lord.
At the age of ten she and three other girls of her age under the pastorate of Rev. Gilbert came forward, and publicly accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord. She united with the Methodist Episcopal church and was an active member of the same during her life, transferring her membership from Lebanon to Milton after her marriage and removal to Milton. She was always ready to assist in any way being especially gifted as a singer of the gospel. On Sunday November 6, she was in attendance at the services of the church and was looking forward to the meeting which was just starting but was too ill to attend and now she has joined the heavenly choir where her voice will ever serve and praise her Master. Her church, the Jephthian Sunday School class and the Young Women's Home Missionary Society will greatly miss her. She was a member also, of the Order of Eastern Star.
On August 22, 1917, she was united in marriage with E.C. Snodgrass of Milton Iowa. They were classmates in high school, and the friendship of happy school days ripened into love, which made the ten years of their married life pass all too swiftly. On March 5, 1925, they were made most happy in the birth of a baby boy. How proud and happy she was of her Lawrence. Thus there falls to the stricken husband, not only the sorrow of his unspeakable loss, but also the responsibility of rearing the motherless laddie.
Marie as we all knew her, was as a child and woman, a strong personality of more than usual talent. Even when young she was often called upon to assist in entertainments to sing and give readings, in which she was most proficient. As a child in her home she was a blessed joy, as wife and mother she was loving and faithful, as a friend and neighbor she was always kind and helpful, as a Christian she was always true to her Lord and her trust in Him was implicit.
She leaves the husband, E.C. and son Lawrence, her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Muir, two brothers Clare and Lemar; two grandmothers, Mrs. E.B. Sample and Mrs. T.I. Muir; other relatives and an unusual number of friends.
Funeral services were held at the M.E. church on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. H.F. Gilbert, who read the scripture lesson from Rev. 21 and 22. His text was taken from I Cor. 15:57 "Thanks be to God who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
A quartette composed of J.R. Holland, Paul Leaverton, Gay Morgan, Howard Bell, with Miss Lucille Leaverton at the piano, sang, "Satisfied." "Beyond the Smiling and the Weeping," and " All is Well."
The church was filled with sympathizing friends and the Jepthian class of which Marie was a member attended the services in a body, also the Eastern Star members. Many beautiful flowers were sent by firends and the remains were laid to rest in Sunnyside cemetery. I am not related and am posting this obituary for those who might find this person in their family history.
